The Congolese army launched attacks on the AFC/M23 positions located in Kavumu near the Bukavu airport in South Kivu, where they were significantly defeated.
Around 5 PM on Sunday, April 13, 2025, the Congolese army launched attacks in the areas of Kavumu, Katana, and Lwiro. These areas are located in the Kabare territory in South Kivu.
Reports indicate that this Congolese army operation originated from areas within the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, as well as other regions in those areas.
Media outlets in the DRC reported on this story, including one by Daniel Michombero, which stated that Wazalendo took control of the Kavumu area near the Bukavu airport. However, an M23 fighter denied this, claiming it was a baseless lie, asserting that they had dealt a heavy blow to the Congolese army and that they still controlled all of Kavumu and other areas that had been attacked.
He stated: “We control all of Kavumu. We also monitor other areas where the enemy had launched attacks, as we drove them away.”
He continued to say: “The FARDC and their allies carried out those attacks that will not be forgotten. They were hit hard!”
In a video message that surfaced regarding the fighting that took place this Sunday in Kavumu, it shows corpses said to be of Wazalendo lying on the ground, where there appears to be a large pile, and others scattered on the roads in those areas where the fighting occurred. Moreover, there were other reports on social media that many M23 fighters coming from Bukavu were providing assistance in Kavumu, claiming that heavy fighting was taking place at the Kavumu airport; this information was denied by the M23 fighter, who told Minembwe Capital News that no fighting ever took place at the airport.
He said: “Wazalendo does not have the strength to drive us away, to the point of reaching the airport! They are lying. In fact, we have pushed them back when they come from there.”
These attacks come after previous ones that occurred in the city of Goma on the night of Friday into Saturday, April 12, 2025, which took place in many parts of the city of Goma and in other areas of the Nyiragongo territory in North Kivu.
These attacks were also repelled by the M23 group, according to reports at that time.
