
President Azali Assoumani of Comoros is the new head of the African Union.
The 36th meeting of the heads of states and states of the African Union (Africaine Union) elected the new head of that organization. President Azali Assoumani of Comoros replaced President Macky Sall of Senegal who had been in power for a year.
In this capacity, President Azali Assoumani will be assisted by other heads of four countries visiting different regions of Africa. North Africa has yet to elect its successor, who will lead the family next year. South Africa will be led by President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana who may lead the family in 2025. Central Africa will be led by President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi who may lead the family in 2026. Their secretary is President Macky Sall of Senegal who has always led the family.
Colonel Azali Assoumani took power in 1999 by overthrowing the regime of President Saïd Massounde. He later organized and won the elections in 2002. In 2006, Assoumani was replaced by President Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi. In 2016, President Assoumani returned to power through elections, and was re-elected in 2019. He created a constitution that allows him to lead Comoros until 2029. President Azali Assoumani is 64 years old.
