Uvira: Governor Tells Wazalendo That FRN Has Greater Military Strength — Their Surprising Response

Minembwe Capital News (MCN)

The issue of money allegedly collected from travelers at Wazalendo checkpoints in various parts of Uvira, South Kivu Province, has resurfaced after Governor Purusi criticized the practice, saying it damages the country’s image.

He stated that some travelers are reportedly required to pay as much as 50,000 Congolese francs (FC) in what he described as unauthorized taxes, while those entering areas controlled by FRN are not charged.

He said:

“A traveler leaves an area under our control and is forced to pay up to 50,000 FC in unauthorized taxes at checkpoints in Wazalendo-controlled areas. However, when that same traveler enters an area controlled by FRN, they pay nothing. Nobody harasses them in the slightest. Can you see how you are damaging the country’s reputation? The enemy does not harass people, yet this is happening on our side!”

In response, Wazalendo fighters reportedly said: “It is because we are hungry.”

Their response raises questions about whether the fighters’ living conditions may be contributing to the money they demand from civilians. However, hunger cannot justify forcing members of the public to pay money against their will.

Addressing the issue requires an independent investigation and measures to stop any unlawful collection of money from travelers. At the same time, the relevant authorities should seek appropriate solutions to the fighters’ living conditions without allowing civilians to bear the burden through coercive payments.

Ultimately, security in Uvira must prioritize the protection of civilians and ensure that travelers are not subjected to unauthorized charges or unlawful financial demands.
