The United States has made a strong decision to suspend visa issuance to all citizens of South Sudan because the government of that country has refused to accept its nationals whom the U.S. has deported from its territory.
This is outlined in a statement released by the U.S. on April 5, 2025, signed by its Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Marco Rubio, which states that this decision was made because South Sudan has refused to accept South Sudanese nationals deported from its territory.
Rubio, in that statement, said: “The government of South Sudan has failed to accept South Sudanese nationals in a timely manner.”

In this way, the U.S. immediately decided to suspend visas held by South Sudanese nationals as well as to halt visas for those wishing to enter the country.
The United States states that this decision will remain in effect until South Sudan agrees to accept its deported citizens.
Since Donald Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2025 as the 47th president of America, he has been making strong statements regarding undocumented immigrants in America and send them back to their countries of origin.
Furthermore, Rubio said that this is the time for the government of South Sudan to stop benefiting from America.
He said: “This is the time for the government of South Sudan to stop benefiting from America.”
He continued to call on all countries to accept their citizens in a timely manner.
This is not the first time America has halted visas for citizens from African countries, as in 2020, it made the decision to stop issuing visas to all Burundians.
