In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), security services have arrested General Bolingo Matani, a senior officer in the national army (FARDC) holding the rank of Brigadier General.
He was the deputy to General Tshibangu, the commander of the 21st Military Region headquartered in Kasaï-Oriental Province.Reliable sources within the security services report that General Bolingo Matani was arrested in the city of Mbuji-Mayi before being transferred to Kinshasa for further investigation by the relevant authorities. His arrest is part of a special investigation aimed at cleaning up the Congolese army and uncovering soldiers suspected of having infiltrated the security services while serving interests contrary to those of the nation.
The senior officer is suspected of serious crimes, including complicity and treason. He is accused of communicating with the enemy in ways incompatible with his military duties actions that could have seriously undermined national security. There is also ongoing controversy surrounding his nationality, particularly because he is Banyamulenge, an issue that continues to be questioned by the authorities handling his case.
This comes at a time when the Banyamulenge community in the DRC continues to face the consequences of discrimination, with some members detained in various parts of the country while others have reportedly been killed solely because of their ethnic identity.Among those detained are other senior military officers, including General Éric Ruhorimbere, General Padili Jonas, and several others.
However, security officials maintain that there is credible information indicating that General Bolingo Matani maintained inappropriate relationships and collaborations inconsistent with the high-ranking position he held within the military actions that exposed the country to serious security risks and weakened its security institutions. Following his arrest, he was immediately detained at the CNC (National Council for Cyber Defense), a specialized institution responsible for monitoring and analyzing major cases related to national security, espionage, and serious crimes targeting state institutions.
Reports further indicate that he is expected to be transferred to Ndolo Military Prison, where he will be held while awaiting trial. The arrest of General Bolingo Matani adds to the growing list of FARDC senior officers who have been arrested in recent months, accused of collaborating with the AFC/M23 coalition, betraying the country, and, in some cases, allegedly plotting to destabilize the highest leadership of the state including accusations of attempting to assassinate President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi.
This case continues to be closely monitored, as security authorities emphasize that purging the military is a necessary step to restore public trust and to confront the persistent security challenges destabilizing eastern DRC and other parts of the country.
