Many soldiers of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) along with armed groups, including FDLR and Wazalendo, have left the city of Uvira heading to Luvungi in order to start launching attacks in Kamanyola, Nyangenzi, and Bukavu, areas controlled by AFC/M23.
Luvungi is an area located in the Rusizi plain, known as Plaine Dela Ruzizi, which is where the territories of Walungu and Uvira in South Kivu are divided.
Our sources indicate that on Sunday, April 13, 2025, many soldiers from the Kinshasa government left the city of Uvira heading towards the Ruvungi area.
As they were heading to that area, reports suggest that they were accompanied by fighters from armed groups that closely collaborate with the Congolese army.
However, as the information continues to indicate, not all government soldiers left Uvira; rather, a small portion remains, along with a few Wazalendo and FDLR members.
The report states: “FARDC, FDLR, and nearly all Wazalendo left the city of Uvira for Luvungi. They want to initiate a war against AFC/M23 in the areas they lost.”
It continues: “But not all of them left; there are still a few remaining here in the city of Uvira.”
Since the M23 group took control of Kamanyola at the end of January this year, the coalition of armed forces fighting on the side of the DRC has continued to launch attacks aimed at retaking it, but this group has pushed them back.
More than four times in the past month, this coalition has attacked this group in the areas they control in the Rusizi Plain, only to be repelled.
M23 controls a large part of the Rusizi Plain, as it overlooks the Gatogota area, which is a short distance from Luvungi, and other significant hills in that area.
