Extreme Brutality: Bashi Traders Kidnapped for Supplying Goods to Banyamulenge Communities
As security continues to deteriorate in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, serious acts of violence against civilians are being reported, particularly targeting those accused of collaborating with Banyamulenge communities. Recent information from the Minembwe area indicates that three traders from the Bashi community were kidnapped by armed groups, including Wazalendo, FDLR, and Burundian forces, allegedly for transporting goods to areas inhabited by the Banyamulenge.
The traders were reportedly captured in the Kipupu area, located in the Itombwe sector of Mwenga Territory, in South Kivu Province. Sources indicate that they had been selling various goods in Ndondo, within the Bijombo groupement, and were also supplying them to Minembwe. According to local residents, the traders were accused of helping Banyamulenge communities access basic necessities—an act said to be opposed by the coalition of the Congolese national army (FARDC) and allied armed groups, including Wazalendo.
This incident occurs amid ongoing reports of a deliberate effort to block all goods from reaching Banyamulenge-inhabited areas, a move some observers interpret as an attempt to isolate these communities and deny them access to essential means of survival.
Political and security analysts warn that such actions may constitute systematic persecution based on ethnic identity and could amount to serious crimes against humanity if they continue in a manner that deliberately undermines the survival and well-being of a specific group.
This is not the first time such incidents have been reported in areas such as Minembwe, Mikenke, Mibunda, Ndondo, Rurambo, and Bibogobogo. Reports continue to indicate that Banyamulenge communities in these regions are facing repeated attacks on both their lives and property, with some alleging that these acts are aimed at forcibly displacing them and denying them the right to live in their own country.
International human rights organizations are being urged to take immediate action to halt these alleged acts, which are said to be driven by discrimination and hatred. There are also increasing calls for an independent investigation to establish the truth and hold those responsible accountable.
As the situation for civilians grows increasingly dire, there is a pressing need for coordinated efforts among various stakeholders to restore peace, protect civilians, and ensure that human rights are respected for all, regardless of ethnicity or origin.
