After preying on cattle, the male lion, Loonkiito, was speared by neighborhood herders in Olkelunyiet hamlet on Wednesday night. In southern Kenya, the settlement abuts Amboseli National Park.
The lion went into the community from the park in search of food, according to Paul Jinaro, spokesman for the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), who told the BBC that the animal was elderly and feeble.
Although Mr. Jinaro was unable to confirm if it was the oldest lion in the nation, he did say it was “very old.”
The conservation group Lion Guardians said that Loonkiito was the oldest male lion in its environment and maybe all of Africa.
He was a representation of fortitude and harmony, the group stated in a statement.
WildlifeDirect’s CEO and naturalist Paula Kahumbu expressed her sorrow over the lion’s death and asked for legislation to save the nation’s wildlife.
“Human-wildlife conflict has reached its breaking point, and our nation must do more to protect lions”.
Kenya so far has committed it’s self in promoting the conservation regardless of the culprits that still hinders the initiative by endangering their well being.
