The MRDP/Twirwaneho group operating in South Kivu, which opposes the government of President Felix Tshisekedi, has appointed its new leadership.
This is stated in a press release issued by the group, which indicates that Freddy Kaniki Rukema has been appointed president of the group.
Kaniki Rukema is currently the deputy leader of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), where he is responsible for finance and economy.
While Brigadier General Charles Sematama, widely known as Intare-Batinya, has been appointed the first vice president, responsible for military operations and security, he is also the senior commander of the Twirwaneho armed group.
Alexis Mugisha has been appointed the second vice president of Twirwaneho, in charge of leadership, politics, and diplomacy.
Adele Kibasubiza, former director of Mahoro Peace Association, has been made the secretary general.
Kamasa Welcome, who is the spokesperson for this group, announced that this decision was made by the members of the group on 18/04/2025.
This comes as the MRDP-Twirwaneho group has announced that it has joined the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), which includes the M23 group. They made this announcement following the death of General Rukunda Michel, known as Makanika, who passed away on 19/02/2025, after a drone attack by the Congolese government forces while he was in Gakangala, which resulted in his death.
