The government began distributing a sizable quantity of food and non-food supplies to the displaced people staying at the Bushagara site in the Kibati groupement, in Nyirangongo region, on Sunday, May 28.
The Bushagara location is home to roughly 3,000 homes that escaped the war by FARDC (Congolese national army) in partnership with rebel militias like Maimai Nyatura and FDLR (also known as the “Rwandan insurgent”) against the M23 mouvement.
He took use of the opportunity to reaffirm the Government’s commitment to restoring peace to the areas where these displaced people were born so that they may go back.
Sama Lukonde went to this location and expressed the government’s sympathy for these refugees:
“His Excellency the President of the Republic has requested that we invest every last penny in it. We came up with this plan to visit you here after doing so. a few clothes and food items.
I’ve been to North Kivu before, but this Bushagara camp is the first place I’ve been there. I want to find you when I come back, in Kibumba, Rutshuru, and Masisi, in your homes.
The humanitarian community urged the Prime Minister to find a quick fix for the perilous housing conditions for the displaced and the rising number of reports of rape against displaced women on Friday, May 26.
“Peace is even more essential, and we must all unite behind our army and national police to bring it about. We must contribute with all of our resources to end the insecurity brought on by the M23, which Rwanda is supporting, so that you can go back to your villages, the Prime Minister reprimanded.
Sama Lukonde hopes that this rehabilitation of the displaced people to their homes would happen soon.
As of December 2021, there were 5.4 million internally displaced people (IDPs) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), making it one of the continent’s most complicated and protracted humanitarian disasters. In addition, there were about 1 million Congolese refugees and asylum seekers across the continent at the same time, including 853,000 in neighboring countries who were directly impacted by the situation in the DRC. Most refugees have left the eastern regions of the provinces of North and South Kivu, Ituri, and parts of Kasai, Haut Katanga, and Tanganyika.
