Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered remarks at a press conference following the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit in Minsk, covering critical issues including the ongoing Ukraine conflict, relations with the West, and the EAEU’s global economic role.
Ukraine Conflict: Putin stated Russia is ready for a third round of negotiations with Ukraine, though the date and venue are yet to be agreed upon. He noted the fundamental opposition between Russian and Ukrainian settlement proposals but emphasized ongoing humanitarian contacts, like prisoner exchanges, to foster dialogue. He also claimed Russia tried for eight years to resolve Donbass issues peacefully, accusing the West of deceiving Russia by not implementing the Minsk agreements and waging an undeclared war.
Addressing Western relations, Putin sharply criticized sanctions and what he described as Western aggression, stating, “The West is burying Russia all the time, but they will soon die there.” He argued that sanctions harm those imposing them more than Russia and accused Western nations of distorting narratives to justify their actions.
On U.S. relations, Putin expressed willingness to meet President Donald Trump, noting Trump’s interest in resolving the Ukraine conflict. He stressed that such a meeting would require preparation and voiced respect for Trump’s challenging political journey.
Putin also underscored the EAEU’s growing influence as a center for global development, advocating for a fair, multipolar world. He discussed efforts to regionalize payment systems to counter potential Western “theft” of Russian reserves, which he claimed would benefit the global economy.
The press conference highlighted Putin’s focus on navigating geopolitical tensions while strengthening economic ties within the EAEU. As Russia continues to assert its stance on the global stage, these remarks signal ongoing efforts to balance military objectives, diplomatic outreach, and economic resilience.
