video showed Ukrainian troops counterattacking near Khromove and Bila Hora, towns west and southwest of Bakhmut that Russian forces had been aiming to conquer in order to encircle the city.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the funder of the mercenaries known as the Wagner Group who have led the assault on the city, appeared to corroborate the Russian retreat. On May 9, he said that because to the “stupidity” of commanders, a Russian battalion left their position close to Bakhmut.
“Everything is being done right now to make sure the front line falls. Today, one of the defence ministry’s battalions retreated and left their posts on one of our sides. “Everyone ran away,” Prigozhin stated.
Russian soldiers, who had moved near Khromove on May 5, suffered a rare setback. They continued to push two days later, this time 15 km (9 miles) north of Bakhmut.
The conflict’s deadliest battle, on both sides, occurs at Bakhmut. According to Serhiy Cherevaty, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s eastern troops, the conflict has cost Russia a significant number of lives over the course of its nine-month duration, accounting for half of its projected overall losses.
Prigozhin threatened to withdraw his soldiers, claiming that the Russian defence ministry had denied his troops access to artillery rounds, which had resulted in casualties.
On May 5, Prigozhin publicly announced that he was pulling his troops out of Bakhmut in an open statement to the Russian army commanders.
“We must transfer positions in the Bakhmut settlement to defence ministry forces on May 10, 2023, and we must remove the Wagner remnants to logistical camps to lick our wounds. Wagner forces are being evacuated from Bakhmut because, in the absence of ammunition, they are destined to die needlessly, according to Prigozhin.
