Banyamulenge Detained in Kalemie Appeal for Help, Call for International Justice
Families of Banyamulenge who have been detained for days in the city of Kalemie, in Tanganyika Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), are appealing for justice and urgent humanitarian intervention. This follows the failure of all legally recognized domestic channels to provide a solution to their detention.
Information from the families indicates that two weeks ago these individuals were arrested by FARDC soldiers solely because they are Tutsi, with no other charges brought against them. Among them is Mazimpaka Sengoga, who was arrested at the Kalemie market where he had gone to buy food for his family.
Two others, Karisa Ruhamanya and Nyamuhoza, were also arrested in the city of Kalemie. All were detained solely because of their origin and identity, according to their families.
Family members who spoke to Minembwe Capital News stated that the Banyamulenge Mutualité operating in Kalemie made several attempts to secure the release of the detainees through legal means, but all these efforts ended without success.
Banyamulenge living in the Democratic Republic of Congo have for a long time reported injustice and discrimination, particularly in matters related to security, human rights, and justice. However, their families say that the international community has continued to ignore these issues, acting as if they do not exist.
The families of the detainees are calling on international human rights organizations, humanitarian agencies, and United Nations bodies to intervene urgently in this matter, with the aim of securing the release of these individuals, as they are accused of no crime other than their ethnic origin. They stress that no country should imprison its citizens because of their ethnicity, and that the right to live freely and to be protected by the law must be guaranteed equally to all.
