Bukavu Protests: Residents Criticize DRC Government, Oppose U.S. Sanctions on AFC/M23, and Express Concerns Over Proposed Constitutional Reform

A large-scale protest took place in the city of Bukavu, South Kivu Province, where residents voiced their dissatisfaction with the governance of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) under President Félix Tshisekedi. Demonstrators said the protest was intended to draw the government’s attention to what they described as persistent challenges affecting the population, including insecurity, deteriorating living conditions, and concerns over the country’s governance.
According to information provided to Minembwe Capital News (MCN) by one of the participants, protesters gathered in Bukavu to express frustration with what they characterized as the government’s inadequate response to the challenges facing South Kivu Province and the broader eastern region of the DRC.
The demonstrators cited ongoing insecurity, economic hardship, rising market prices, and declining living standards as key factors contributing to what they described as a growing loss of public confidence in the current administration. They called on the government to implement concrete measures to address these issues and restore public trust.
During the protest, some participants also criticized the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on several leaders of the AFC/M23 coalition. They argued that such measures could have negative implications for ongoing peace initiatives aimed at resolving the long-standing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Another major issue raised during the demonstration was the reported proposal to amend the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Some protesters expressed concern over the initiative, stating that they do not support constitutional changes undertaken without meaningful public participation or broad national consultations involving all relevant stakeholders.
Participants were seen carrying placards and flags bearing messages calling for improved governance, greater respect for citizens’ rights, and increased public participation in decisions concerning the country’s future.
According to witnesses at the scene, the demonstration remained peaceful throughout, with participants urging the relevant authorities to consider their concerns and respond through lawful processes and constructive dialogue.
