Me. Maniragaba Byashoni John, a Munyamulenge lawyer and human rights advocate, has issued a strong message concerning the history of violence and genocide allegedly committed against the Banyamulenge, particularly during the month of August, when, for the 22nd time, the victims of the 2004p Gatumba massacre in Burundi are being commemorated.

Me. Byashoni, who is known for his involvement in the history of the self-defense struggle in the highlands of Mulenge in Minembwe and surrounding areas, delivered his message in a written statement. He called for the history of what happened to the Banyamulenge not to be forgotten and urged that those suspected of serious crimes be held accountable through due legal processes.

According to Me. Byashoni, the month of August is a period of profound sorrow for the Banyamulenge, as it marks the commemoration of approximately 166 refugees who were killed on August 13, 2004, at the Gatumba refugee camp in Burundi.

In his statement, he said that the massacre should be subjected to an independent and legally grounded investigation so that the truth can be established. He further stated that if the involvement of any individual or institution were to be established by judicial authorities, those responsible should be held accountable and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He also referred to previous reports concerning the alleged involvement of the FNL in the attack, stressing that such claims should be examined through independent investigations and judicial processes before individual responsibility is determined.

In his message, Me. Byashoni did not focus solely on those who may have participated directly in the attack. He argued that investigations should also examine the responsibilities of those entrusted with protecting the victims, as well as those who may have contributed to preventing such crimes from being brought before the courts.

He noted that such matters could be investigated in light of the responsibilities of various institutions, including Burundian authorities and those responsible for protecting refugees at the international level, with each party assessed according to its legal responsibilities and the available evidence.

Me. Byashoni also recalled other historical episodes that, he said, left deep wounds among the Banyamulenge.

He referred to killings and acts of violence that occurred in Bibogobogo, Ngandja and Uvira in 1996, as well as killings targeting Banyamulenge in various parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1998, including Kamina, Kinshasa and Kalemie, among other locations.

He further recalled the killings of Banyamulenge in Bukavu in 2004, stating that testimonies and other sources indicate that violence was taking place at the time with the aim of forcing Banyamulenge to leave the city.

According to Me. Byashoni, all these events resulted in a large number of deaths, the destruction and displacement of families, people being forced to flee their homes, and deep wounds that remain embedded in the history and lives of survivors.

Me. Byashoni emphasized that the number of people killed in these tragedies should not be treated merely as statistics, because behind every figure were individuals with families, friends, and personal histories.

He stated that these tragedies left families without their loved ones, displaced communities, and historical wounds that continue to live in the hearts and memories of members of the Banyamulenge community.

In his view, commemorating the victims of these tragedies should not be limited to remembrance ceremonies alone. Rather, it should also serve as an opportunity to call for the truth to be established, for justice to carry out its responsibility, and for history to be documented fully and accurately.

In concluding his message, Me. Byashoni prayed for the victims of these tragedies to rest in peace, while calling for justice to be served and for the truth about what happened to be brought to light.

He also called for all individuals whose involvement in crimes is established through independent investigations and fair judicial proceedings to be prosecuted and, where appropriate, punished in accordance with the law.
