Tooro Kingdom: The Secrets of the Unique Rituals Preceding the Coronation of the New King, Nyabongo I

In the Tooro Kingdom, the coronation of a new king is not merely a ceremony in which a crown is placed on his head and he is seated on the royal throne. It is a series of centuries-old traditional rituals intended to mark the end of a previous reign, the transfer of royal authority, and the beginning of a new era.
One of the most intriguing elements of these rituals is the “non-violent battle” performed at the Mugabante Gate, the entrance through which the new king enters Karuziika Palace, the seat of the Tooro Kingdom.
On this Tuesday, 29/09/2026, the Tooro Kingdom is crowning Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo I as the new King of Tooro, succeeding the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on 27/07/2026.
What Is the Tooro Kingdom?
The Tooro Kingdom, known in the local language as the Tooro Kingdom, is located in western Uganda, with Fort Portal serving as its principal city and the seat of the kingdom.
According to the Tooro Kingdom, its historical roots can be traced to the ancient Kingdom of Kitara and the Batembuzi, Bachwezi, and Babiito dynasties. The independent Tooro Kingdom emerged around 1830, when Rukirabasaija Kaboyo Omuhundwa Kasusunkwanzi Olimi I, the son of Omukama Nyamutukura Kyebambe III of Bunyoro-Kitara, separated Tooro from Bunyoro-Kitara and became its first king.
Following periods of political turmoil and changes in governance, Tooro regained its independence in 1891, during the reign of King Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe IV.
In 1967, the Government of Uganda abolished the traditional kingdoms that existed in the country. More than two decades later, in 1993, the kingdoms were restored, allowing their cultural institutions and royal structures to resume their officially recognized roles.
Where Does the Tooro Kingdom Extend?
Today, the Tooro Kingdom is primarily associated with several areas in western Uganda, including Kabarole, Bunyangabu, Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, and Ntoroko, as well as Fort Portal City, which serves as an important centre of the kingdom.
It is important to distinguish the traditional boundaries of the kingdom from the administrative boundaries of the Ugandan government. The kingdom is a traditional and cultural institution, while Uganda’s districts are structures of state administration.
Historically, the geographical extent of the Tooro region has changed as Uganda’s administrative areas have been reorganized and divided. For example, Kabarole, Kamwenge, and Kyenjojo were once part of the same administrative area before being divided into separate districts.
Karuziika Palace: The Heart of the Tooro Kingdom
Karuziika Palace, located on Karuziika Hill in Fort Portal, is the principal seat of the King of Tooro and one of the places of greatest historical and cultural importance to the Tooro people.
The first palace was built during the reign of King Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe IV in the early 20th century. It was later renovated and expanded. Since then, Karuziika has remained a venue for major royal ceremonies, including events associated with the coronation of a king and the commemoration of royal anniversaries.
The Tooro Kingdom has also confirmed Karuziika as the official seat of the King, while other royal buildings may serve as residences for the King but are not regarded as the formal seat of the kingdom.
What Does the “Non-Violent Battle” Mean?
One of the distinctive stages of the coronation ceremony is a symbolic battle, known as a non-violent battle, which is not intended to cause injury or trigger an actual conflict.
The ceremony takes place at Mugabante Gate, before the new King enters the palace.
During the coronation of Nyabongo I, royal officials explained that the new King will arrive at Mugabante, where he will encounter those representing his opponents in the symbolic battle. After defeating them, he will enter the palace through the main entrance known as Omusanga, before proceeding to the royal throne.
This is not regarded as an actual war. Instead, it symbolizes a transfer of authority, portraying the new King as having overcome all obstacles and as possessing the authority to enter the palace and begin his reign.
During this year’s ceremony, Richard Rwabuhinga, who is overseeing the coronation activities, said that the symbolic battle will take place between the forces of the head of the royal clan, Musuuga, and those of the new King. The ritual is intended to symbolize the transfer of royal authority.
The Ceremony Began on the Eve of the Coronation
This time, the coronation ceremony of Nyabongo I began on the evening of Monday, 28/09/2026, ahead of the actual coronation day.
The designated King was expected to depart from Rwengoma Palace at around 10:00 p.m., heading towards Karuziika accompanied by a large group of people, some of whom carried torches made from dried grass.
The journey to Karuziika symbolized the King’s arrival to take possession of the royal seat. It ended at Mugabante Gate, where the symbolic battle was performed.
After the ceremony, members of the general public were expected to remain outside, while the new King and members of the royal family continued into the palace to perform additional rituals reserved exclusively for the royal household.
The Royal Drums Are Repositioned: A Symbol of a New Reign
Another important ritual takes place inside Karuziika, involving the repositioning of the royal drums and other royal regalia.
Following the death of King Oyo, some of the royal drums and other instruments had been placed in a symbolic arrangement to represent mourning and the suspension of the royal reign.
During the transfer of the throne, these items are returned to their normal positions, symbolizing the end of the mourning period and the continuation of the kingdom under the new King.
How the New King Is Seated on the Throne
According to Tooro cultural traditions, the coronation ceremony does not end with the symbolic battle.
After Nyabongo I passes through Mugabante, he is guided through Omusanga and then taken inside the palace, where he undergoes a series of other traditional rituals.
Those responsible for preserving royal traditions have specific roles during these ceremonies. They include custodians of the royal drums, officials responsible for royal regalia, and those entrusted with the King’s weapons.
Among those responsible for the royal weapons is the Omweganywa, whose duties include safeguarding royal weapons such as spears, shields, and swords. During the coronation ceremony, these weapons may be presented to the King as symbols of the responsibilities and authority associated with his new position.
The Babiito and the Royal Succession
The Tooro Kingdom is ruled by the royal Babiito clan, which plays a central role in matters concerning the identification and confirmation of the King’s successor.
As part of the coronation process of Nyabongo I, the Babiito Royal Clan announced him as the successor to the late King Oyo, following confirmation by the Kingdom’s advisers and the relevant institutions.
The head of the Babiito clan, known as Musuuga, also plays an important role in ceremonies associated with the transfer of the throne. This demonstrates that, within Tooro culture, the coronation of a King is a ceremony that brings together the royal family, cultural custodians, kingdom officials, and the people.
Why Do These Rituals Continue?
Although Uganda is a republic and traditional kingdoms no longer exercise political authority in the same manner as the state, the Tooro Kingdom continues to play an important role in the culture, history, values, and unity of the Tooro people.
The kingdom itself describes the King as a cultural leader and a symbol of unity among the Tooro people. Therefore, the coronation ceremony is not regarded merely as the installation of a leader, but also as a means of preserving the historical and cultural continuity of the kingdom.
It is in this context that the non-violent battle performed at Mugabante should be understood as a symbolic ritual. It is not an actual conflict between individuals, but rather a traditional representation of the transfer of royal authority to the new King before he enters Karuziika and assumes his position as the leader of the kingdom.
On this date, 29/09/2026, these ceremonies mark the conclusion of the transition from the reign of the late Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV to the new reign of Omukama Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo I, as Tooro continues to preserve the traditions that have accompanied its monarchy throughout its long history.
