FARDC and Burundian Drones Kill Cattle of Banyamulenge in Major Attack
As insecurity persists in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, reports from the highlands of Minembwe in South Kivu Province indicate that a significant drone strike has killed large numbers of livestock belonging to the Banyamulenge community.
According to these reports, FARDC forces, in coordination with Burundian troops and armed groups including Wazalendo, carried out drone attacks that targeted villagers’ cattle, killing over 61 cows and seriously injuring more than 35 others.
A Minembwe resident, speaking to Minembwe Capital News, confirmed the severity of the attack, stating: “Last night, over 61 cows were killed, and more than 45 others were badly wounded.”
The attacks occurred in the Rundu area, near the center of Minembwe, and add to recent strikes in several other localities, including Gitavi, Gakenge, Kalongi, Kalingi, and Bidegu.
Minembwe has long been plagued by insecurity, driven by military operations conducted by government forces in collaboration with Burundian troops and armed groups targeting Banyamulenge neighborhoods. Members of the Banyamulenge community, a significant portion of the local population, have repeatedly reported being specifically targeted in these attacks, which result in the loss of both human lives and livestock.
Livestock, particularly cattle, is central to the livelihoods, economy, and culture of these communities. The loss of so many animals has severe consequences, including hunger, extreme poverty, and forced displacement.
The use of drones in such attacks continues to spark debate among security analysts. Experts warn that deploying these modern technologies in civilian-populated areas can significantly escalate the intensity of conflict and place civilian lives at extreme risk.
As violence continues to rise in Minembwe and other parts of eastern Congo, there is a pressing need for sustainable peace measures, including political dialogue, cessation of hostilities, and protection of civilians.
Residents in these regions are urgently appealing to the international community for assistance, seeking protection and humanitarian aid before the situation deteriorates further.
