By December 2023, the Innovative Digital Platform (INNODIP), an initiative to combat unemployment led by the University of Tourism, Technology, and Business Studies (UTB) and the Rwandan government, will be completely operational.
However, a test version will be accessible by September. Its main goal will be to assist the government in creating 1.5 million non-farm jobs for residents who are unemployed, including those who are disabled.
INNODIP seeks to strengthen government initiatives through modernizing Rwanda’s workplace of the future.
The project, which was funded by the United Kingdom Department for International Development (UKAid) and Research and Innovation for Africa (RISA), was essential as a result of a study that a group of university researchers did on the state of partnerships between the academic and business communities.
Rwanda is an agricultural country, with 70% of the people working in the industry, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization. It does, however, make the one-sector economy subject to the effects of abrupt changes in the price of its exports, even as this encourages food security and maintains a consistent supply of raw materials with which businesses produce medicine and other necessities.
The skills gap in business, technology, and data science exists in Rwanda as it does in many other African nations. The fact that most of its economy is informal hasn’t helped one bit. It’s also important to note that the country’s rising unemployment is partly due to a number of skill gaps between graduate skill sets and employer expectations.
Prince Wasajja Kiwanuka, the project director, described the purpose of INNODIP by saying that it will use web-based technology to “enable easy access and data entry for all users, including job applicants, industry stakeholders providing recommendations for curriculum revisions, and internship opportunities, while ensuring high-level data protection.”
INNODIP will get a mobile app developed.
In recent years, Rwanda has made a lot of fuss about combating unemployment, with the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) being a considerable effort. One of the NST1’s top aims is creating 1.5 million off-farm jobs as part of efforts to tap into other industries like construction and light manufacturing, as the majority of its labor force is heavily invested in agriculture.
Therefore, the study recommended developing an online platform that, when released, will go beyond simply addressing the cooperation gap and include additional functions like research facilitation, curriculum revision, and internship placements. If it works, the neighboring countries of Kenya and Uganda will also benefit from this approach.
One of the continent’s top IT clusters is already regarded as being in Rwanda. For every nation seeking economic diversification and international investment, technology and the expanding discussions about its potential are crucial.
