Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Once Again Criticizes DR Congo’s Politicians and Calls on Catholics to Remain Vigilant
Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, the Archbishop of Kinshasa and one of the highest-ranking leaders of the Catholic Church in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has once again delivered a strong message urging Catholics to be cautious about politicians, arguing that many of them pursue personal interests rather than working for the well-being of the population.
He made the remarks on Monday while celebrating a Mass in Bokungu, Tshuapa Province, during the official ceremony to welcome Bishop José Bernard Likolo, who was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Lisala and entrusted with the temporary administration of the Diocese of Budjala.
In his address, Cardinal Ambongo emphasized that the Catholic Church remains committed to defending the interests of the Congolese people. He also stressed that bishops are not seeking political power or financial gain, but rather the improvement of citizens’ living conditions.
He stated:
“Dear Christians, remember that if there are people who truly love this country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, they are your bishops. They are not politicians who use your names to pursue their own personal interests. We do not seek money or positions of power; what we seek is the well-being of the Congolese people. Be cautious of politicians.”
These remarks reflect the Catholic Church’s continued position that it has a responsibility to defend the interests of citizens, particularly at a time when the country continues to face major challenges related to security, the economy, and governance.
In recent years, relations between the Catholic Church and the government of President Félix Tshisekedi have been marked by disagreements over several issues concerning the management of national affairs.
Through the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) and its leaders, including Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, the Catholic Church has repeatedly criticized government policies on issues such as insecurity in eastern DRC, poor governance, justice, corruption, and the lack of concrete solutions to the challenges affecting the population.
On the other hand, President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration has consistently stated that it is doing everything possible to restore peace, strengthen security in eastern DRC, and implement reforms within state institutions. However, opposition figures and some civil society organizations argue that many challenges remain unresolved and require urgent action.
Through various messages and statements, the Catholic Church has continued to call on Congolese authorities to prioritize the interests of citizens rather than political interests or those of specific groups.
Political analysts suggest that Cardinal Ambongo’s remarks could further intensify tensions between the Catholic Church and the government, especially as the country continues to face security, economic, and governance-related challenges.
Nevertheless, the Catholic Church maintains that its role is not to engage in politics, but rather to promote justice, peace, and the protection of the interests of the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
