Uganda’s national carrier, Uganda Airlines, has announced that it will launch daily flights connecting Entebbe International Airport and Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, starting on 18 December 2026.

The decision is considered a significant step toward strengthening cooperation between the two neighboring countries in key sectors, including trade, transportation, tourism, and investment. Uganda and Rwanda have long maintained economic ties and social relations built on the movement and interaction of their citizens.

Uganda Airlines’ management stated that the introduction of this new route aims to provide passengers with more travel options, simplify regional air transportation, and respond to the growing demand from travelers moving between Uganda and Rwanda.

The Entebbe–Kigali route is among the busiest air corridors in East Africa, driven by increasing business activities, the presence of international organizations, investor movements, tourism, and frequent travel between the two countries.

Aviation analysts say Uganda Airlines’ entry into this route could increase competition among regional airlines, contributing to improved services, greater passenger choice, and more competitive airfares.

Uganda Airlines already operates flights to several destinations across Africa and beyond. However, the introduction of daily flights between Entebbe and Kigali represents part of the airline’s broader expansion strategy and its efforts to strengthen its role within the East African Community (EAC).

The airline’s existing network connects Uganda with cities such as Nairobi, Juba, Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Kinshasa, Lagos, Johannesburg, Mumbai, and Dubai, among other destinations. Entering the Kigali market further highlights Rwanda’s growing importance in regional air transportation.

In addition to the Entebbe–Kigali route, Uganda Airlines has announced the launch of a new route to Accra, Ghana, beginning on 27 October 2026. The Accra flights will operate four times a week, while the Entebbe–Kigali flights will operate daily.

In a statement released by the airline, Uganda Airlines said:

“Two new cities, one Crane.”

The message reflects the airline’s ambition to continue expanding its flight network and contribute to connecting Africa through efficient air transportation.

History of Uganda Airlines

Uganda Airlines was originally established in 1977 as Uganda’s national airline. After years of financial and management challenges, the airline ceased operations in 2001.

After nearly 18 years of inactivity, the Government of Uganda revived the airline in 2019, re-establishing it as a modern national carrier with the goal of promoting air transportation, facilitating international trade, and supporting tourism development.

Since its revival, Uganda Airlines has invested in modern aircraft, including the Bombardier CRJ900 and the Airbus A330-800neo, enabling it to operate regional routes and connect Uganda with international destinations.

Today, the airline continues to expand its operations, with the objective of linking Uganda to more African countries and global markets.

Expected Benefits of the Entebbe–Kigali Route

Aviation experts believe that the introduction of daily flights between Entebbe and Kigali could contribute to:

  • Facilitating easier movement of passengers between Uganda and Rwanda.
  • Promoting trade and investment between the two countries.
  • Supporting tourism growth and making it easier for visitors to explore both nations.
  • Increasing competition in the aviation sector, leading to improved services.
  • Strengthening cooperation among East African Community member states.

As Africa continues to invest in improving air connectivity, the launch of daily flights between Entebbe and Kigali is viewed as an important development that will help enhance the movement of people and goods while contributing to economic growth across the region.
