Citizens in Guinea-Bissau staged a public demonstration to express concern over what they described as ongoing violence and killings targeting the Banyamulenge community in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to video footage and accompanying messages from the protest, demonstrators urged the international community not to remain silent about the security situation in eastern DRC. Carrying banners bearing the message, “Stop Genocide Against Banyamulenge in Congo,” they called for an end to the killing of civilians and appealed for stronger international action to protect vulnerable communities.
The protesters said they wanted their voices to be heard globally, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights and ending all forms of violence against civilians. In their statements, they stressed that the Banyamulenge community in eastern DRC should no longer be subjected to killings and called for lasting peace, justice, and the protection of civilian lives.
The demonstration adds to a series of similar protests held in different countries, where members of the public and the Banyamulenge diaspora have continued to denounce what they describe as violence against communities living in the Minembwe Highlands and other parts of eastern DRC.
As differing accounts of the conflict in eastern DRC continue to emerge, international organizations have repeatedly called for independent investigations into alleged crimes committed against civilians. They have also urged all parties to strengthen measures aimed at protecting civilian lives and upholding fundamental human rights.
